Tips for Writing Your Wedding Vows

Just like the bond you’ve built with your partner, your wedding vows should flow naturally and feel unique — but that doesn’t mean writing them will be a breeze. If you’re struggling to find inspiration to you tell your fiancé exactly how you feel, check out the following tips for writing your wedding vows.

Getting Started on Your Vows

Writing wedding vows takes time and effort, and you don’t want to feel hurried when putting them together. Therefore, the key to getting started on your wedding vows is to get started early. Give yourself enough time to write according to your style. If you want the freedom to freely write whenever inspiration strikes, allow yourself ample time to write as many drafts as you want. Or, if you’d rather have your vows organized a specific way, set yourself a schedule with a few draft deadlines and a final draft review.

To get the ball rolling on the actual writing process, make a quick list of what you might want to include. This list doesn’t have to dictate everything that is or isn’t in your vows. It’s simply a guide to help you start thinking about what you’d like to say on your special day. Maybe you’ll want to write a special quote, retell a story, or dedicate a poem to your partner.

Finding the Right Inspiration

What reminds you of your partner — a book, song, smell, or place? Revisit the memories that you’ve shared, and reflect on what those moments mean to you. If you need some extra inspiration, think about:

  • How your partner relates to you

  • What you love about your partner

  • How, when, and where you met

  • Funny or romantic memories with your partner

  • What you want to do with your partner in the future

If you hit a rut during the writing process, take a break. You’ve allowed yourself plenty of time to write, revise, and finalize your vows, so don’t be afraid to step back when you need to focus more on finding the right inspiration to start or finish writing.

Polishing Your Thoughts

Once you have everything written out, go back and review your vows. Don’t scan them with a critical eye — simply look at what you’ve written to see if it feels true to you. It may even help to write a few unique drafts and choose which one you like best. Then, practice reading your vows out loud. Does the writing sound like you, and do you like the way it sounds? When you feel confident about your vows, you’re ready to share them with your partner.
